Bought a car today....

...sorta.

Bebe's 1994 Mustang bit it this weekend. She sure hung in there, 12
years, 100,000+ miles. It's the only car Bebe has ever driven, or owned.
Alas, the time for the Mustang had come, and it suffered a mild heart
attack (crack in the head gasket) and we had to put her down.

So, this weekend Bebe went out looking for a car. After going a bunch of
places, she decided on the Honda Accord Coupe. It's a slick car.
Unfortunately, she didn't have enough credit to buy it, so I had to.
Thus, technically, I own it, even though she's making the payments.
Actually, I don't even own it, it's a 3 year lease.

Anyway, it's a nice car, and she looks good driving in it. I took it for
a spin myself today to the gym, it feels really really good. I'll be
sure to drive it much more.

Not too much going on other than that. Got out new dining room table
delivered this weekend, that's nice. Looks really good.

It was great seeing T. Stew get what had had coming to him this weekend.
Karma's a bitch Tony.

My tits hurt

As expected, my whole body hurts...okay, so I'm being a bit of a pussy.
I don't hurt that bad. My elbows are still tight, and my leg muscles are
a bit sore, but other than that I'm in pretty good shape. Actually, I
expected to hurt worse, so this is okay.

Still working on getting my music copied over. A reader pointed me to
allmusic.com to get album covers. I'll have to check that out. Thanks,
whoever it is.

Anyone else read the slew of articles on MSN sports today about the fall
out from the race? Evidently, Jimmie was a bit pissy at Ryan Newman and
his comments. I remember hearing Newman say that stuff after the race,
and now, come to think of it, he sounds like a bit of a sore looser.
Darrell Waltrip and his crew chiefs were just as "dirty" as Knaus is,
and I don't hear anyone giving Darrell shit? Well, maybe they did back
in the day, but Newman just sounded like a pansy. I mean, sure, Jimmie's
had some things that seemed questionable, but anyone that doesn't think
his car, and all those at Hendrick for that matter, aren't looked over
with a fine tooth comb? Newman can qualify really well, he does things
with that car no one else can do, he just can't turn it into a win.
Jesus, doesn't the guy have a degree in mechanical engineering? Shit, if
I were him I'd be in the shop trying to do the same shit Knaus does.

I'm not sure what to think about this whole port ordeal the press has
decided is a big issue. I can't remember the last time the left and
right agreed on something, but actually, I thought W made a good point
the other day, albiet a misguided one. He mentioned something along the
lines of, "Why is it okay fur us to let one foreign company run the
port, but we say no to another?" It was rhetorical, I think, but he did
bring up a good point. These ports were run by a British company before
being bought, and prospectively run by a state owned company from Dubai.

Here's what I don't like, it's state owned. This means no open books,
policies, or control by the people. In all reality, it's an extension of
the Dubai government. Dubai, last I checked, isn't exactly a hotbed for
poltical or ethical fairness. They're a dictatorship basically, and
don't have elections. I heard some figures that 80-90% of their
workforce are basically slave labor from India, Pakistan, and Indonesia.
Crazy! Now, if this was a public company from Qatar, I don't think the
outrage would be the same. It's the state owned deal I, and I think most
others, have issues with. That and 2 of the 9 9/11 hijackers are from
there, and much of the whole 9/11 operation was funded through Dubai
banks, but that's another issue.

Now, there's no way that anything is really going to change at the
ports. The Coast Guard and Customs Agents run security, always have,
always will. They can go where ever whenever they want, and there is
nothing the Dubai company can do. So, I don't buy that this is going to
be more dangerous. Also, if something did happen (i.e.nuke goes off
somewhere) and we find out it came through that port, and that the
company had something to do with it, there would be no Dubai left. I
mean that. This won't be an invasion, not like Iraq, we would nuke
Dubai, end of story. Well, hang on, we'd nuke them if it happens on
Bush's watch, or another Republican's (execpt maybe McCain). If it
happens on a Democrat's watch we'd just bomb them to hell with
M.O.A.B.S. and other crazy mad explosive stuff.

So, as much as I don't like who will be running the ports, I don't
really see it as THAT big of a deal. I will think it's funny if W uses
his first veto to block legislation, and then have that veto over
turned. I'd just shit myself laughing.

Have a beer.

T Stew sucks ass

This one goes out to Zach... T. Stew sucks ass. I hope he gets into Mark
Martin so that old man can whip Stew's pudgy ass. I'd laugh so hard if
Martin opened up a can on Stew.

Back to reality... is anyone else as anal about their iTunes music as I
am? I'm FINALLY importing all of my CDs into iTunes. However, I didn't
realize that iTunes won't grab an image for your songs, you have to go
find the album art and put it on the song yourself, which sucks. I mean,
it's not that big of a deal, but since I'm so anal I just HAVE to make
sure the perfect album art appears when the song comes up on my iPod.

Work's going good. Learning some neat stuff. I've got two project
they're going to brief me on tomorrow about. They sound pretty cool.
I'll be able to start actually working for a change, instead of sitting
around trying to find something to do. I've got a lot of neat new
programs I would have never had a chance to work with at my last job.
So, I'm learning stuff too.

My arms are killing me today, but it's a weird sort of muscle pain. I
mean, sure, much of my body has the typical soreness you get when you
first start to lift weights again, and actually I don't hurt that bad
except for my elbows. Something I did yesterday really strained the
muscles right to the outside of the elbow. I was worried it might be a
tendon, so I looked up some anatomical pictures and was able to indeed
locate the muscle there that is causing me the pain. I made sure to
stretch it out through the day and by the end of the day I was doing
pretty good, at least good enough to be able to do other arm exercises
at the gym today. I also did legs, but not too hard, so hopefully I
won't be walking like a gimp tomorrow at work.

Monday, bloody Monday

I can feel it now... I'm going to be hurting tomorrow.

Busy weekend to be honest. Bebe has the plague, so she was sick the
whole time, which left me free to do what I wanted basically. So I did.

First, I got me a gym membership to the local Golds Gym. A lot of people
don't know this but I was a very seriously weight lifter for a few years
in college. Actually, I was serious up for the first six months I lived
here in Atlanta too. At my peak I weighed 240 pounds and was a big dude,
too big. Then, I got a job far from my gym, got home late, yada yada
yada, and stopped working out. About six months or so ago I started to
exercise again, part time I guess. Well, the time came for me to stop
using the little fitness center at my club house, all the shits broken
now anyway thanks to punk kids. At any rate, today was my first day at
Golds, and I'm sure I'll be sore tomorrow. I didn't overdo it or
anything, but you're always sore after the first day you work out.

Second, I bought me a 19" LCD monitor. Been wanting one for a long time.
I didn't get a top of the line or anything, but this will do. It's nice,
and gives me a lot more room on my computer table. I had a big as 21"
CRT that was just freaking huge. Don't get me wrong here, it had a
fucking amazing picture, but I just didn't need it anymore. I bought it
back in the day when I thought I would do more PC gaming, which I never
did. So, I've got it up on Craig's list now, maybe someone will buy it.

Third, my cousin Chris came over to watch the Daytona 500. It was a good
time, and Jimmie won, who I have on my fantasy team. Unfortunatly, since
Jamie McMurray wrecked, I lost against my fantasy opponent, which sucks.
It was still a fun race to watch.

My second full day at work today. It's still odd getting in at 6:30 a.m,
but hey, I get to leave at 3:00, so it balances out. I don't HAVE to
come in that early, it's my choice. With Atlanta traffic, if I don't
leave that
early then I'm going to spend over 2 hours a day in my car, and I would
really rather not do that. A 30 minute drive to and from work is fine
with me. I mean, sure, it sucks driving to work in the dark, but hey,
what are you going to do?

I've got a bunch of shit I need to finish writing, and some more stuff I
have to draw. I hope to start to get back to some of that stuff this
weekend.

First day at my new job

Today was my first day at the Teachers Retirement System of Georgia. I
can't even express how different it was waking up today. I didn't have
the dread, the hate, or the other shit I've been dealing with for so
long at my last company. Sure, TRS won't be peaches all the time, but I
am just so happy to be leaving behind the product, clients, and industry
I've been working with.

I am going to miss the people I worked with though, and that was the
main reason I stayed as long as I did. When Zach and Brent left I knew
my time was numbered, and a few things pushed me over the endge shortly
after that. I'm going to miss Bill, Brent, Roshanda and Matt, but what
are you going to do. I'm sure I'll keep in touch with several of them,
if not all.

I'm still psyched though. Going to be working on some cool projects
right out of the gate. I've got some learning to do, but it will be
hands on. My first project will be cleaning up some sectors of bad data
in the database. We're going to take a look at the data and attempt to
figure out it there is a human element causing this, or if it's
symptomatic. It will take us a while to figure it out, but we've got
enough data to dive right in and figure out where in the program the
issue is coming up.

Big weekend with Daytona on Sunday. I'll be prepping for that most of
the weekend with the Busch race Saturday, and some prerace stuff Friday.
I'm just glad NASCAR is back on, I've missed it. In fantasy new, I've
drafted Jimmie Johnson, Jamie McMurray, Jeff Burton, and Dale Jarret for
my team. I'm hoping for rebound years for both Burton and Jarret, but am
sure that McMurray and Johnson will post good years no matter what.

Valentine's Day

Happy Valentine's Day everyone.

Let's look at how much of a crock of shit this day is. First, everything is more expensive. Second, it's only for the women. Third, guys don't get shit (if we're lucky we get some sex). Fourth, it's not even a real holiday (which are denoted by a day off work). Fifth, would anyone really notice if Hallmark didn't push it like crack? Sixth, its on a Tuesday, how lame is that? Seventh, I've got to drop 200 bucks for dinner. Eight, it's in February, which is the lamest of all the months. Ninth, too many guys do some stupid cheesy proposal today. Finally, how lame of a saint is St. Valentine?

I've always thought today was a crock of shit, and I still do. It makes couples complain, and single people sad, so who actually gets the win here? Oh, that's right, Hallmark, restaurants, and florists.

3 days left

Today, Tuesday, Wednesday, then I'm gone bitches!

I have three days left here at my current job. I can't say I'm going to miss it here. Each day I sit here, realizing the crummy people I'm not going to have to take crap from anymore. It's mainly our clients I'm sick of dealing with. I don't really have any issues with people here at work. Our clients are just scummy people who are pains in the ass.

Anyway, I start my new job Thursday. Should be a nice change.

No Engrish today, and I may not post for the rest of the week due to stuff going on.

One more thing

Aaron,

I've been doing some drawing of your character. Right now it's just some studies and whatnot, so I can get the rust off. However, I do have a pretty good head shot done I'll post today or tomorrow sometime.

-O

Where have I been?

Things have been kind of weird here are work since I gave notice.

I do most of my posting in the morning from work, but probably won't be doing that much of the rest of the week unless something big happens.

On the flip side, I've done a reinstall on my PC at home and have a new e-mail program called Thunderbird that I've configured to work with my GMail account. It's pretty freaking sweet and I'll have it configured to send posts to my blog soon.

Sound like anyone or anything you know...?

Fourteen Defining Characteristics Of Fascism

Dr. Lawrence Britt has examined the fascist regimes of Hitler (Germany), Mussolini (Italy), Franco (Spain), Suharto (Indonesia) and several Latin American regimes.

Britt found 14 defining characteristics common to each:

1. Powerful and Continuing Nationalism - Fascist regimes tend to make constant use of patriotic mottos, slogans, symbols, songs, and other paraphernalia. Flags are seen everywhere, as are flag symbols on clothing and in public displays.

2. Disdain for the Recognition of Human Rights - Because of fear of enemies and the need for security, the people in fascist regimes are persuaded that human rights can be ignored in certain cases because of "need." The people tend to look the other way or even approve of torture, summary executions, assassinations, long incarcerations of prisoners, etc.

3. Identification of Enemies/Scapegoats as a Unifying Cause - The people are rallied into a unifying patriotic frenzy over the need to eliminate a perceived common threat or foe: racial, ethnic or religious minorities; liberals; communists; socialists, terrorists, etc.

4. Supremacy of the Military - Even when there are widespread domestic problems, the military is given a disproportionate amount of government funding, and the domestic agenda is neglected. Soldiers and military service are glamorized.

5. Rampant Sexism - The governments of fascist nations tend to be almost exclusively male-dominated. Under fascist regimes, traditional gender roles are made more rigid. Divorce, abortion and homosexuality are suppressed and the state is represented as the ultimate guardian of the family institution.

6. Controlled Mass Media - Sometimes to media is directly controlled by the government, but in other cases, the media is indirectly controlled by government regulation, or sympathetic media spokespeople and executives. Censorship, especially in war time, is very common.

7. Obsession with National Security - Fear is used as a motivational tool by the government over the masses.

8. Religion and Government are Intertwined - Governments in fascist nations tend to use the most common religion in the nation as a tool to manipulate public opinion. Religious rhetoric and terminology is common from government leaders, even when the major tenets of the religion are diametrically opposed to the government's policies or actions.

9. Corporate Power is Protected - The industrial and business aristocracy of a fascist nation often are the ones who put the government leaders into power, creating a mutually beneficial business/government relationship and power elite.

10. Labor Power is Suppressed - Because the organizing power of labor is the only real threat to a fascist government, labor unions are either eliminated entirely, or are severely suppressed.

11. Disdain for Intellectuals and the Arts - Fascist nations tend to promote and tolerate open hostility to higher education, and academia. It is not uncommon for professors and other academics to be censored or even arrested. Free _expression in the arts and letters is openly attacked.

12. Obsession with Crime and Punishment - Under fascist regimes, the police are given almost limitless power to enforce laws. The people are often willing to overlook police abuses and even forego civil liberties in the name of patriotism. There is often a national police force with virtually unlimited power in fascist nations.

13. Rampant Cronyism and Corruption - Fascist regimes almost always are governed by groups of friends and associates who appoint each other to government positions and use governmental power and authority to protect their friends from accountability. It is not uncommon in fascist regimes for national resources and even treasures to be appropriated or even outright stolen by government leaders.

14. Fraudulent Elections - Sometimes elections in fascist nations are a complete sham. Other times elections are manipulated by smear campaigns against or even assassination of opposition candidates, use of legislation to control voting numbers or political district boundaries, and manipulation of the media. Fascist nations also typically use their judiciaries to manipulate or control elections.

Hrmmmm.... interesting, sounds like where I live.

Today is the first day of the rest of my career

Well, I'm out of here folks!

I had my third interview with the Teachers Retirement System of Georgia yesterday and it went extremely well. It went so well in fact that I they called me on my way home to make an offer.

Although I told my future boss "I was certain I would accept the position, I was going to talk it over with Bebe, and let him know tomorrow." Well, it's tomorrow now, and I will call him later today to let him know.

I feel really good today, better than I have for some time. I came into the office today, turned on my computer, and wrote my letter of resignation (effective February 15th). I'm sure it's not the first thing my current boss wants to see today, but oh well, that's not my problem.

Here's a few reasons why I'm leaving Trandotcom Solutions:

1. I am on my 4th boss in under two years.
2. They have never once followed through on any promises.
3. I am not doing what I interviewed for.
4. I have little faith in senior management.
5. I don't think anyone truly wants to make things better around here.
6. I'm paid below the average for someone of my experience in my position.
7. I'm treated like a kid.
8. My suggestions are not taken seriously.
9. No one truly cares whether or not I'm happy.
10. I've expressed my frustrations and unhappiness with several members of management to no avail.
11. There is no room for advancement.
12. I can't see myself here any longer.

I think that's a good list of reasons to leave a company.

Let me tell you a bit about where I'm going. First, the job is with the Teachers Retirement System of Georgia as a Business Analyst. This is a "state government" job, so the corporate mentality will be much different than what I deal with now. Second, I'll be making 25% more money annually. That's a big jump in pay for me, but in reality it's the average amount of money someone of my experience should be making for that position. That should give you some perspective how underpaid employees of my scale are at Tran. Third, 15 days paid vacation, 10 days paid sick leave, 12 paid holidays, full health, life, disability, and dental insurance. Take that and your TAW time Tran! Fourth, pension, enough said.

It was really a no brainier for me. This position is more in line with my overall career goals and I'm excited to get started.
